Wisconsin households are smaller than the national average

By the numbers

The average Wisconsin household is 0.2 persons smaller than the national average of 2.53 people, Census data show.

The estimates are taken from the Census Bureau’s five-year American Community Survey tables, averaging estimates from 2019 to 2024.

The counties with the largest households were Menominee County, at 2.99 persons, followed by Clark at 2.67 and St. Croix at 2.54. At 2.53 members, Pierce County was tied with the national average. All other counties fell below the U.S. average.

At the low end, the county with the smallest households was Iron County, at 1.96 persons. Door County had 2.01 persons per household, and Sawyer County had 2.04.

Milwaukee County, the state’s largest by population, had an average household size of 2.31 persons, just below the statewide average of 2.33 persons.
