Wisconsinites are among the most likely Americans to stay in the state where they were born, analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows.
The American Community Survey gathers data on a wide variety of personal attributes, including the state where someone is born.
The data show that 72.3% of Americans born in Wisconsin have stuck around and are still living in the state, as of 2023.
Wisconsin was fourth “stickiest” state by this metric, after Texas (81.9%), North Carolina (74.7%), and Georgia (73.8%).
On the opposite side of the spectrum, Wyoming, Alaska and North Dakota had the smallest portion of their native-born population presently living in-state.
Similarly, Wisconsin was among the states with the highest share of native-born residents among its current population. Of the people currently living in Wisconsin, 70.1% were born here.
Louisiana and Michigan had the highest concentrations of native-born residents, while Florida and Nevada had the lowest. Only 27.2% of the people currently living in Nevada were born there.

Wisconsin residents who were born in other states mainly came from Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, California and Iowa.

For Wisconsinites currently living in other states, the top destinations were Minnesota, Illinois, Florida, California and Texas.
