By the numbers
A newly-released report on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, conducted by the consulting firm Deloitte, praised the campus for its fiscal stability and “highly disciplined and centralized budget approach.”
The report was part of a set of such audits of UW campuses released this month, following a first batch of reports released in April. All the reports can be found here.
Data from the UW System Accountability Dashboard show that UW-La Crosse’s nonteaching staff has grown many times faster than its enrollment.
UWL saw an explosion of nonprofessional teaching staff over the past two decades, with ranks now at 159% of the level in 2003. Teaching staff increased to 125% of its starting point. Enrollments rose, too, and are 110% of their 2003 level.
The Deloitte study was conducted as a broader financial review of all UW campuses laid out in the UW System Board of Regents Strategic Plan. Reviews of other campuses identified large deficits and declining enrollments.
The Badger Institute has also analyzed the staffing trends at UW-Oshkosh, UW-Green Bay, and UW-Milwaukee. Among these, UWL is unique in that it trimmed its number of administrative leaders.
The underlying numbers
Enrollment 8,689 in 2003 9,545 in 2023 | Teaching Staff 447 in 2003 558 in 2023 |
Nonteaching Professional Staff 199 in 2003 317 in 2023 | Administrative Leaders 66 in 2003 58 in 2023 |
Staffing is by headcount. Enrollment is by full-time equivalents.
2011 data is missing; UW System Accountability Dashboard blames incomplete data.
